Hi there,

I'm having a problem with my 95 wellcraft 210SCS 5.7 V8 Alpha one Gen 2. I had to repair the gimbal ring on my boat is what started all these issues, but had the boat fixed and back in the water when I realized that the one guy helping me didn't put back on the upper gear oil hose clamp so I was loosing gear oil. The first time I took it all apart I replaced the shift cable with no problems because the old one I used as a guide and set it right back to where it needed to be, but the second time we took it apart the adjustment got thrown out and instead of taking it real easy my one friend decided to mess with both adjustments the one from the throttle and the the one that runs to the drive unit. So my question is I know that the top one is supposed to be 6" barrel to whole, but how do I adjust both of these to get them together right? Right now I have a ratchet action, but when I go to engage it in gear it grinds a little before engaging so I know I got it atleast a little close, but I can't seem to get it just right and I don't want to break anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! The other thing I got a question on to is when we put it back together I found some "extra" parts in the bag that I'm really thinking aren't extra's. Its part number 38473 wrapping and part number 14705 insert. Do these go on the upper part of the cable?

I know that the top one is supposed to be 6" barrel to whole

no the bottom cable, the one that goes through the transom to the bell housing, is set at 6" in FWD gear

then you install it and adjust the top cable, that goes to the remote, to fit to the shift assy

as far as extra parts, take some photos and we can tell ya what ya got and where they go

Both of those should have been put on the cable BEFORE you set up the adjustments. The black plastic is a 'chaff stopper' in the transom plate and the white spiral does the same job but a bit further up the cable, where it would rub on the exhaust...

the white coil is no longer required - they don't even come with oem bravo cables anymore, alphas its your choice

merc decided that the cable will bind up/wear out before the chaff coil allows the outer cable to fail

as far as the black bushing, just leave the old one in place, without pulling the engine they can be quite tricky to replace

Re: Shifting Issues Alpha one Generation 2

Well I had the engine out when I replaced the gimbal ring and had it all back together and it was working just fine minus the oil issue i stated and I'm pretty sure that there is already one in there. But the adjustment part is still giving me issues im very good with car engines and transmissions, but as for this adjusting the cable im a bit confused by. I know its probably something very dumb that i'm doing wrong. I figured out about the put the boat in full forward and rotate the prop to see if it ratchets one way and locks fully the other, but for some reason I'm having big issues with getting the adjustment just right and its still grinding when engaging the gear. Any suggestions you can give me to fine tune it to where it needs to be? I'm doing this out of water with a hose hooked up I don't know fi that matter or not, but figured i'd state that.
