Shifting issue

Went out today on the lake and had some shifting issues. Reverse engages easily. Forward grinds and sounds like it is poping in and out of gear. Once it engages it stays in gear and runs great. Almost like my shift cable is not moving enough to fully enage. Is this a cable issue, adjustment issue, or worse? It is a 2000 Jonhson 150.

Re: Shifting issue

Take the shift cable off and **** Manuel and see what happens. If its fixed you need adjustment. If not you need a new clutch dog.

Re: Shifting issue

I think he meant to say shift it manually with the shift cable removed. If it shifts okay then go for the adjustments. If not , it's dog time.

Re: Shifting issue

OK I started it this evening in the driveway and seems to shift in and out of gear without grinding or clanking. So what would cause it to do it in the water only?

because water puts pressure on the foot.Did you do this with or without my advice on pulling the cable off?

Re: Shifting issue

i did disconnect the shift linkage and it shifted in gear, put the cable back on and still shifted. Seems like the issue is when its under load. I just remember this is the first time Ive had the boat on the water since october, in october the machine shop changed my powerhead ( guess thats what it was it was blowing water eerywhere and wouldnt hold pressure even after new pump and seals). Could they have not put it back together right?

Re: Shifting issue

Ill tell you the easiest way to tell,go to the lake and shift like you normally do,If it grinds remove the cable and do it again. If it does not grinding the cables need to be adjusted. If it does grind it needs a new clutch dog.

Re: Shifting issue

Ok so I have not hadback on water yet, but took it the mechanic and he adjusted the shift cable and put the motor in a tank and it went into forward fine. I brought it home and decided to goahead and change the lower unit oil on it. The oil was dark green and had some small glitter look to it which I guess is metal shavings. The mechanic said its fine as long as its not chunk or large shavings. I notice in the driveway even after the mechanic adjustments. When you put the motor in reverse the prop locks both directions. Forward locks in one direction and make one ratchet like in the other direction then it locks in both directions. Is that normal?
