I recently broke down and cleaned the carbs on my 1999 Honda BF25A to correct a stall/ rough idle issue. I also replaced the impeller as a maintenance item.

When I did the impeller I took great pains to return the nut on the shift linkage to the exact position I found it down to the thread. However, when sitting in neutral at the shifter I am actually in forward according to the gear box. I have tried to adjust the nut on the shift linkage just above the lower unit, but it really does not seem to effect the shifting process.

Is there an adjustment topside in the engine compartment for shifting adjustment?

If it worked good before you did the carb and impeller work then don't go changing other things that you didn't mess with. You'll just cause other problems. The lower shift rod probably wasn't in the right place when you put it back together.

Thank you. Can you provide guidance on how I might go about re-alligning the shift mechanism? I did a complete carb breakdown and I am thinking that perhaps I got the reassembly wrong.

I can't speak to that particular motor because I haven't done one of those. Typically you have to make sure both the upper control and the shift rod are in the correct position (either neutral or fwd or rev) when you slide the lower unit back up into the case. And you have to make sure you don't bump the shift rod out from that position when you're doing it (which is what sometimes happens) before putting the bolt back in and tightening it down.
