Hi all, first I would like to thank the many that have spent time explaining to us all how to and what to adjust to get the proper use of the shift/throttle control. There are many threads in this forum that explain to the tee how to adjust not only the cables but how to set up the shift shaft. Well I spent 2 days, adjusting over and over to absolutely no avail. On a few posts guys mentioned the shift shaft seal on the top of the lower unit, where the water pump is. Well, about 6 bolts later, I’m starting right at it, I thought it would have been a much bigger job but it wasn’t. Of course it being 35 years old, I couldn’t find something local so while waiting for parts, I lubed everything up good and put it back together. I lubed the controller too and what do you know, it’s working great. My buddy always said grease is cheaper than parts, so I guess he’s right. Any way I am ordering the water pump, shift shaft seal, new O rings and when they come in I will have the whole thing done in a couple hours. So what I’m trying to say is don’t chase the adjustments for too long before thinking about the shift shaft seal.
