shift sound

First boat mercruiser 1970 engine serial # 3681706 140 mc1 am concerned with shift noise seems to"clunk" when Engaging in forword or reverse. Have not ran in water yet (only muffs) do you think this noise is normal? Am worried i over torqed cover ring when replacing bearing carrier/all seals in sterndrive also replaced lower shift cable and shift spline. Having trouble adjusting shift interupter so i installed a bolt in center of bracket could not center roller . Don't want to damage gears/clutch dog . Your opinion/advise is appreciated thanks...
After running in water today I felt it shifted fine so fyi it will clunk on muffs but in water seemed to be operating fine
