Does anyone know what tool i can use to remove the shift shaft bushing?
I'm looking for a cheaper alternative. I've tried using a few different things but this
bushing will not budge. What other tool can be used to remove this bushing besides
the actual Merc tool?

So, that also takes me to another point.
I tried looking into ordering the tool but am confused.
The part # for the tool that is required for my boat is 91-23033 and i cannot find it anywhere.
I'm also noticing that many tools are listed as being for MC-1/R/MR/Alpha One/bravo drive units.
How can i tell which lower unit i have?

The motor is a 1994 40 hp 4cyl with serial #0c188040.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Shift Shaft Bushing Tool

Do you have the s/n correct as the one you provided comes up as a Mariner?

MARINER - ( 40 H.P. (1989M )) Note: 1989
Serial No: 0C188040 Model No: 70404129D

And do you have the service manual P/N: 90-814676R1? If not, PM me with an email address and I can forward it to you.

Shift Shaft Bushing Tool

It looks like this. Just find a piece of pipe and cut the end to fit

I was hesitant about buying that tool because if the difference in the part # and
wondering if the hole in it that allows the shaft to go thru may be different.

I'll try the pipe.

Re: Shift Shaft Bushing Tool

The s/n comes up as a 1989 from the Mercury site.

What do you mean by what type of LU? Do you mean long or short, standard or bigfoot?
