Re: shift rod screw head diameter

there is this tool for getting out tough screws, don't know the name but you hit it with a hammer and it moves with a slight rotation. about 6 in. long pretty heavy and comes with different size bits including large flat head. warm it up and whack it. heat and your impact with the right bit should do it. i like using the really large screwdriver and visegrips on the shaft for extra torque. i'd say heat for 30 sec intervals.

A 24oz hammer on the impact driver usually works. Wear a leather glove and twist the impact driver anti clock to lock it then hit it firmly.

I tried with the impact driver, no luck, it is sitting really hard.
As JamesR says, impact driver should work well. Are you using the driver properly? There is a technique...you can't just place it on the screw and hit with hammer. You have to grip it and twist it to hold it before hitting. Place the driver bit in the slot. Grip impact driver firmly, and twist it as if you are trying to turn the screw out. It obviously will not move as it is stuck, but keep that twisting pressure firmly on it, and whack the top of the driver with your hammer. You should see the bolt head turn a bit, hit it again, while holding that firm turning force on the tool. I cannot believe that this tool will not have success in getting out your stuck drain plug.

Re: shift rod screw head diameter

dear all, I owe you an update.

Through the winter I have given it some oil now and then on top of the drain plug to let it work - today me and a colleague used a small torch and heated the plug - after a few precise and hard hits it finally loosened. So I am quite happy now :). Thanks again for all advice.

If anybody has some spare new magnetic drain plugs for the '94 Johnson 250 model for sale please let me know.

You should be able to get them right here on I-Boats.
