Hello,

I will now try to remove the lower unit of my 1994 250hp oceanrunner and need to loosen the shift rod screw so the unit will come down - anybody happens to know what the size of this screwhead is? tried a 10mm but seems just a bit too big - maybe 3/8"? I tried to find a drawing but could not find this specific piece on any drawing.

hope anyone knows

Try a 3/8" and see what happens.

3/8 on a 1/4 drive extension works well. If there is a screw driver slot then use a long slim screwdriver to remove after freeing with the wrench. Try not to drop the screw in a place you can't get too. I like to use a split screwdriver for the last couple of threads. Dark in there aint it.

Thanks for replying, I bought the right tools and will give it a go. It sure is dark in there :)

Am I correct that I have to loosen the 6 bolts on the lower unit and the shift rod screw and then the LU should come right off (so total of 7 screws)? It was off last year but then I did not do it myself.

don't forget the bolts under the cav plate !!!!!!!!!!!
there is 1 holding the trim tab on and another up under there a bit harder to see !!!!!!!!!!

remove prop first, it will get in the way plus you don't want to damage that when moving the leg around.

phill: thx for advice - will make sure to loosen these. Prop is removed already.

Just one more question to ease my nerves ;-) : can I just loosen the screw on the shift rod and that's it? No more tricks to perform? That is the thing I am most unsure about...

No, it has to come out of the shift rod.

Re: shift rod screw head diameter

A 1994 model should have the hairpin to pull and the linkage slides sideways, no bolt to remove.

boobie: thx for clarification

TLL: there is definitely a bolt through the rod with a screw driver slot and the papers say 1994 model

Nope. It is a bolt. 3/8 head, slotted, and tapered. Special bolt. Do yourself a favor and remove the port side lower cowling. Four 3/8" bolts, all from the port side, and you can get in there WAY easier.

I stand corrected, looked at the parts diagram and it is the old style bolt system. Learn something everyday.

daselbee - thx for reply - will try to remove the lower cowling to get easier access.
TLL - no worries, same goes for me.

Will let you know in a couple of days how it went

The proof is in the picture.... thanks all for good advice on the how and what - it came off just so easy once done as you told me to.

I used the long flexible screwdriver (50cm) after having loosened shift rod pin with a 3/8" flex handle. After that I loosened all the bolts holding the LU including the one under the cav plate (tricky one). After that it just slide down by its own.

I plan to have the unit sandblasted and repainted (is this ok to do?), replace all anodes etc but the main project I fear is to get the upper oil screw off - see the pic of the upper oil screw - I need to change gear oil but this screw is VERY hard to get loose :-(

So if any of you again would have some good advice on how I could solve this I would be very happy to try this.

Get an impact screw driver with the proper bit and it may pop right out.

Re: shift rod screw head diameter

Thanks, had already purchased an impact screw driver but have to find the correct (large enough) bit for the screwhead. Meanwhile I have put som oil on top of the screw letting it work...

Re: shift rod screw head diameter

Spray it with PB Blaster or try a little heat around it with a propane torch.

Re: shift rod screw head diameter

I tried with the impact driver, no luck, it is sitting really hard. PB Blaster unfortunately not available in Europe. Guess that leaves me with the propane torch option. Is there anything that can take fire in the LU, anything to take especially into consideration? Should I drain it for oil through the other screw (that is loose)? Or is it an advantage to keep the oil in?

thx again

Drain the oil out of it and then try it.

Re: shift rod screw head diameter

ok, i have drained the oil out and am ready for the propane torch option. Can you tell me for how long I should heat the area around the screw? Guess too warm is no good and too cold will not help. Any idea on this?

Re: shift rod screw head diameter

Heat around the screw and try your impact driver. Then heat it some more and try it. Keep on doing this until it breaks loose. With a propane torch you don't have to worry about melting the housing.
