shift rod removeal

I have a 1990 Evinrude ZP 150. When removing the lower unit, where do you take the shift rod loose, and how difficult is it?

Others here will probably help more but on my 1996 88 its under the intake manifold. I had to remove the lower carb to get to the bolt the first time. I think it was a 7/16. I think a swivel head socket on an extention would work great.
