Shift Rod removal Johnson 70s era 115 HP?

I've removed lower unit bolts. Unit is suspended by shift rod. I can see that shift rod is threaded into the "shift rod connector" that is pinned to the arm that connects to shift cable. Do I have to pull carbs to get to that pin ,or what? That connector has to be threaded off that rod or the rod won't let the foot come off? help..

I have a 1980 model and had to get a long extension with the correct socket to get mine off (used a 1/4 ' drive to do this ) , when you put it back together , it took 2 of us , me with the socket wrench and my son with a scredriver to hold it in place so i could put the nut back on ...hope this helps some .

Exactly what model # is it ??? It sure would be nice if OP'S posted their model #'s right up front as they may get quicker replies !!!!

Its a 1973 mdl 115ESL73M. Please see attachment. Item #76 (shift rod connector) is threaded into # 69 (shift rod) The connector is attached by pin to the shift linkage. The pin is behind the carbs. I can see it but, I can't touch it. Your righ. Stupid of me not mentioning mdl. #

Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up your mtr. Look at cyl and cc parts break down. Look for bolt #12 and loosen it up. I think it takes a 9/16" flex socket. This will let the two arms spread releasing the upper shift linkage. Don't lose bushing # 22. Keep item # 76 in the same position as it comes off when you pull the g/c.
