Shift Linkage?

A buddy has a Bayliner with a 3.0 Mercruiser. Problems with shifting prompted some adjustment of the shift cable. Adjusted one way and it goes into reverse just fine. The other way forward just fine. But can't have both.

Suggestions???

Ayuh,.... My guess is, yer Bud needs a New lower shift cable,...
That 1 is Worn out...
