shift linkage reattachment on merc 150 xri

I have a 1994 Mercury 150 XRI. I changed my water pump impellor. Now I can't seem to line up the shift linkage from the top of the motor to the linkage on the lower unit. Everthing else lined up ok including all of the bolts and drive shaft. Any tricks of the trade?
