I am replacing my water pump on my 1994 90hp Evinrude. It has power trim and tilt. I get the lower unit to drop about an inch or so and need to disconnect the shift linkage to get it all the way off. I'm assuming I need to disconnect the shift rod from the shift lever under the carbs but the shift rod has bend under the powerhead where it meets up with the shift linkage. If I disconnect the rod under the carbs will the shift rod with the bend at the top fit through the steering arm and come out? I do not see any other place to disconnect the shift rod.

Thanks for any advice.

A factory manual would help you alot.....

First of all, its probably going to be necessary to remove the starter motor, you may also have to remate the lower with the trunk and have it in whatever gear gives best access.....

Use a 1/4in drive socket, flexible joint and extension to remove the screw.

Just gotta add, that is such a screwed up location and such a pain in the butt place they put that connection. I'm no engineer, but I gotta wonder about the guy who designed that one, he must have been related to the marquis de sade:)

Re: Shift linkage disconnect/remove lower unit

Just needed to come back and say that disconnecting the shift rod was easier than I had thought it would be. After carefully looking and poking around with the shift linkage I found that all I needed to do was remove the nut holding the control push rod off of the shift lever so I could move it back and fourth easily. There was a pin that went through the shift lever that I pulled. When I did that I was able to push the shift rod toward port side of the motor which disengaged the shift lever from the shift rod. I was then able to drop the lower unit to replace the impeller. Reinstalling was just as easy. slide the lower unit back in, line up the shift rod with the shift lever pin and pull the lever to engage the shift rod. push the retaining pin back through the shift lever and connect the control rod and I was done. No bolts under the carbs to remove and put back. Seems to easy.

Remember when reconnecting that the offset on the top of the shift rod should face the driveshaft
