I have a 54 or 55 7.5 horse evinrude. The shift lever does not shift. It moves freely back and forth. I have the repair manual and minimal mechanical skills. Should I attempt to repair this myself. If not, can you give me a rough guess of how much a repair like this might cost?

Thank you

Terry,

With the manual, it should not be hard at all.

The linkage must have come loose somewhere. If on top, I believe it requires a powerhead removal, but it's not difficult.

Re: Shift Lever

DJohns is right. You have to remove the powerhead. There should be 6 head screws I believe. The head gasket is available from your Evinrude dealer. The shift shaft has threads and a nut on top if it is like the '57. I can't gauranty it is the same since my manual only goes back to 1956. Not a lot of dealers will work on a motor that old for a number of reasons including the repair price being over the value of the motor. With minimal skill, some good tools and a manual, you can fix it yourself and still have an excellent working motor. While you have the head off, it would be a good time to replace the impellor since that requires a head removal also.

If you want to have some exact details on how the shift lever is connected for that model, post your question and model here. There are people there that probably own one or two and have fixed them up nice.

http://www.aomci.org/askamember/index.html
