a few days ago I got a 185HP mercruiser, maybe the year is 1986. I have done the alignment of motor and mounted the outdrive also changed the engine oil. But when I started to fire the motor, the propeller also spinned, it should be stay there without spinning. it stopped spinning when I pull it back to neutral position, Also the farward and back can work.

Also there is some gear noise from lower unit when I tried to make it move farward and back.

Also I found some smoking from the alternator. Is the alternator is broken.
What is the issue.

Going to need some clarification

Start motor and prop spins, but stops spinning when placed in neutral?

That's what should happen, but it should not be able to be started in-gear

Also there is some gear noise from lower unit when I tried to make it move farward and back.
Should be very little noise from drive, check the gimbal bearing for smoothness. It should be silky smooth to feel

Also I found some smoking from the alternator. Is the alternator is broken.
If ALT is smoking then yes it's most likely broken

Yes. Propeller stop spinning when I pulled it back to neutral. and it does fire up in-gear.

For the noise I am sure that is from gear but gear seems has not yet bite completely. So it make noise and motor run sliently without mounting outdrive

I will continue to check if the alt smoking again or not.

Thank you AllDodge

If it starts in gear the neutral safety switch is bypassed or disabled

What is the next action? I can see the lower shift cable moving while I tried to start the motor. Normally it should not move

The Alpha drive can be shifted running or not running
The neutral safety switch is normally in the throttle control unless its a direct or V-drive.

I have tested that it is in-gear while I tried to code start engine.

It seems that following video is better, it mentioned to adjust top shift cable. Tomorrow it will follow this vido, maybe it can help me solve the issue of in-gear while starting motor.

It seems that throttle cannot work. Then top shift cable moves while I pull it to forward position despite the button is pushed or not.

Can the throttle be fixed? Should I replace it with a new one?

Attached video shows that the top shift cable moves even I push the button.

I don't see a throttle only button on your shifter. Yours should be pulled out in neutral then moved forward for throttle only

4 buttons? I see 1 switch with 2 buttons

If the handle button does move in and it's not disengaging the shifter, then it needs repaired or replaced

Your not going into throttle only. Try this, move shift to neutral, grab the bottom of the shifter and pull out. It should move out toward you, then move handle forward

Yes, I have to grap the botton of throttle and pull it out, then push into forward position. You are right. I pull it out, then push forward. Then it works
