2000 5.0 EFI w/Alpha drive
After doing a head replacement and reconnecting all the wiring Engine runs great but wont shift back into neutral. (In the water) I have verified the switch is good. (swapped it with known good one from other engine) On my other engine if press the the cutout with the engine running in neutral it stalls it as expected. I don't get any action pressing it the problem side. Any ideas what else to check for?

Welcome
Your saying EFI so I take it the motor is TBI, correct?

It was working but after head work it doesn't. Look around for a disconnected ground. Will be small with most likely a ring terminal.

Take a meter set on ohms and measure at the switch connector on the black wire and see if it has a good ground

Yes, TBI. I do have continuity from black to switch to ground. Have completely disconnected wiring harness again looking for missed ground or other connection but haven't found anything

With ground being good then it has to be the wire going to the ECM or connector it self (bad connection).

With motor running you should be able to jump across the connector

I just completely bypassed the connector, wired a direct ground and jumped purple switch wire to purple harness wire, no change. I don't think its related but is idling a little high and hunting a little, probably need an IAC.

Hope it's not the ECM, so I would trace the wire

Depends how much its hunting

it's hunting a hundred or two rpm, not consistently. I will attempt to trace the wire tomorrow if I can and report. If I can't find any problem with it can I swap the ECM with the Port one? to test. Thanks for the replies, very frustrating.

You have a twin engine boat? And when you push in the button by hand, one engine will stall and the other will not?…

As a test, can you extend the wires to run to the other engines (opposite) and push in the buttons to see if both engines will stall or change which one stalls.

Swapping ECM had no effect, so I am presuming it is good. Exposing the wire bundle hasn't revealed any problem so far. Not really sure what more to try.

Worst case is wiring it directly to the neg side of the coil if the ground signal is defective inside the ecm

IIRC the shift interrupt switch for an efi engine is normally closed. Opposite of what a carbureted engine uses
