Just purchased 96 Mariner 40 and the engine wiring at the shifter end has a square female connector. (Maybe it went to a boats dash?) My boat shifter has a round pin connector (Mercury). Can I just match the color on the wires and connect them to the round pin connector on the shifter? The shifter that came with the Mariner has no start/key switch so I would like to use the shifter on the boat it is a 02 Merc. shifter. Thanks for any help.
