well id check those gears out if you have the ability. and just a thought. most "good" quality aftermarket gear sets are machined out of a better alloy!! therefore stronger. youll get what you pay for!

Re: shift cable broke

I was looking online to find the shift cable and it appeared the ones I found didn't look right as I didn't see the black plastic end on them that connects to the transition case by the engine. Perhaps the cable end is a separate piece? Does anyone have a good source? I was looking at my cable a little harder and realized that what I have been looking at is an outer casing and the end of the cable which is all black. The actual cable wire is inside the casing and is red. So...I guess this means that it is not the original cable, but should still be replaced since it moves so stiff?

Re: shift cable broke

Mine is an OMC Cobra "86". I pulled the out drive and it looks as if the arm that move the bell crank jumped out of the black plastic piece at the end of the cable. the cable still seems to work but it is stiff so I plan to replace it. Can some one tell me if the black plastic piece on the drive end of the cable comes with the cable or not. I am not sure why the arm that moves the bell crank jumped out of the black plastic end of the cable but maybe it is worn out. my out drive does shift okay by hand if I spin the prop.

grouch, the plastic piece rides on a sleeve that is part of the cable. if its not rigid, its broken and the roller pops out when you shift it.

Okay,
Understand. I will happily replace the cable and new gasket and hope to have a good summer. Who has the best deal on the cable?

Thanks,

learned that the hard way, allowed the unit to drop prematurly and broke the brass sleeve that it part of the cable.everytime we tried it, it popped out of gear, must have had the drive on and off 10 times before i figured it out.

Re: shift cable broke

The black plastic piece has two screws on it that clamp down on the cable. They allow for an adjustment on the cable. If the cable is simply loose within the black piece, then all you have to do is adjust it to the correct position and tighten the two screws. The screws on mine have square heads. However, I am hearing in this string that if the cable is too stiff, it should be replacled because it can somehow cause the gears to be damaged? My black piece had the end break off where it connects to the post and the shifting is very stiff, so I'm looking to replace the cable. I'm not having much luck identifying one online and will probably spend a premium going to the local marine store so they can deal with finding the right one.

Re: shift cable broke

I found a local marine shop that quoted me $350 for the whole job including the cable, but they are booked for two months, so I'm looking at doing it myself as I don't want to wait two months. I got the same message on the wait time from the marine shop that quoted me $800. The last place is going to give me a price for the cable this week. I didn't have the model # information handy when I called from work.
