Shift cable brass pinned to threads

It's crimped to the threads. I used channel locks to adjust to 6inches center to center. Well now my forward doesn't engage anymore. I had no problems before messing with it. But it wasn't 6inches like I was reading. Before changing it. It was 7 or 7 1/2 inches center to center. I'm going to reset it back to 7incges or so. And adjust the top cable. Any ideas? My idle is high at 900. It should be lower.(iac valve?) When I shift into gear I hear shift clunk. From what I read that's not normal it should be quite?. I have 7.4 mpi v8. With bravo 1 xr 2002 crownline 238 db

Nowhere in the manual is there a measurement for a Bravo
I have the manual book, it says to measure 6 inches center to center. But the lower cable has a brass barrel. It's pinned to the threaded shaft. I can force turn with vise grips ect. But seems to me I should leave it alone.
The idle rpm is at 900. Manual says 600 700 range. Mpi doesn't have adjustment screw to lower thr rpm.

Also, the shift clunk noise. Is this normal? Once in grear the boat drives nice.

A Alpha drives uses the 6 inch measurement and clunks going into gear, a Bravo uses a cone clutch and is virtually silent and uses no measured adjustmnt, done with the tool indicated in my earlier post

Ah I was looking at the alpha unit. Page 10-38. Manual 3208.
So the clunk is not normal. I need to adjust my cables correctly.
What about my idle rpm 900?

If you don't mind and have some time to chat your expertise will definitely help me figure this out.

Oh wow, I'm sure I knew that
Thank you for doing that!
So after reading a lot. I ordered the tool. Will be adjusting the cables. Also hoping this will take care of the shuft clunk I am hearing when shifting into gear.
How do I figure out the idle rpm. My boat idles at 900. When I go into gear forward cruise its at 900. Increases when I increase throttle.

being MPI it is controlled by the throttle position sensor so disconnect the throttle cable to see if that is the problem, Yes, adjust the barrel.

Thank you. So if the throttle cable is removed and the boat idles normal. Adjust or replace throttle cable. And if nothing changes what else should I look into. Thank you for the quick reply.
