I have a 1994 with a mercruiser 3.0 and a commander 3000 remote shifter its always been stiff to shift in and out of gear over the past 2 years I have removed disassembled and cleaned the controller replaced the control cables, the lower shift cables, the lower unit with brand new and now the remote shifter. what I have noticed is that everything moves nice and slick (on land not running ) without the Shift Assist Assembly connected but hook it up and its stiff again. So my question is this absolutely necessary or can I leave it off?..

Thanks Mark

Ime older shift assist assys cause more issues than they alleviate. If it shifts great without it but stiff/difficult with it in place my fix is to remove the spring loaded insides and reinstall it so the cables and pins are still congruent. So the shift assist no longer provides tension but the casing allows the system to fir properly on the mounting hardware

shift assist tends to wear out the inner casing core , better off without it
