Re: sheared flywheel key

Think about why it failed.

1. Flywheel may not have been lapped in. ( you need to do this)
2. Key might have caused bad fit.
3. incorrect torque.

when you install lap the parts. Then put flywheel on with out key. Draw a line around crank. Put key in and set wheel back on. The line will be in the same place if the key is not holding the wheel up. Do a good job with the lapping compound. The keys main job is to line things up, not prevent movement. Dont worry about the damage in the key way. Just make sure it has no high spots.

ok thanks for the advice and i'm pretty sure it failed because i had the flywheel off many times while troubleshooting ignition issues so it was probably the torque considering i did not use a torque wrench.

If the flywheel spun you really have to lap it in as Lyle said. Had this happen pnce and didn't know about lapping until I spun it several more times and learned that lesson the hard way.
