I just registered a trailer as homemade in MA and figured I?d share my experience. This is my first time registering a trailer so I searched the forums for some guidance but nothing prepared me fully for the Registry trip.

Before I went to the registry I had my insurance agent fill out and stamp a RMV-1 form. In order to register the trailer as homemade the Registry wants either receipts for all the parts showing how much it cost to make the trailer or they?ll take a Bill Of Sale to/from yourself stating how much the trailer is worth. I found out the last requirements after waiting in line for 2 hours.

Luckily the woman who informed me of the requirements allowed me to go write my own Bill Of Sale and go right back to her after writing it up. I essentially sold myself a trailer while at the Registry. I set the value as $50 and the Registry charged me about $22 for the registration fee.

They probably had to figure sales tax in there somewhere as well. I walk by the Boston registry on the way to work. . . Always a line waiting to get in when they open. I have done a homemade boat registration, but not a homemade trailer. The boat registry (environmental law enforcement) does not collect sales tax at their office, like the motor vehicle registry does. So, I had to walk down the block to the department of revenue, pay the tax on the materials that I had not already paid tax on, get the sign off from them and then go back to the boat registry. Fortunately the lines at the boat registry are not that long.

The Registry taxed me on the $50 ($3.00 give or take I think) that I sold the trailer to myself for on the Bill Of Sale. The boat tax I paid online at my office and printed out the receipt before I walked into the Environmental office to register the boat. They have pretty good instructions on their website. For the trailer the Registry's instructions were, well, very registry like.
