Sharing a berth

Has anybody ever had to share a berth at a dock for the season. I just had to turn down a berth at my local dock because this year they decided to double up on the available berths to accomedate more people. I didn't like the idea of another boat always tied to mine and having to always be moving another boat when I wanted to go. Not to mention trusting a stranger to properly secure my boat and to be responsible for securing someone elses. I'd rather trailer my boat for the season. I think its a bad idea and will be nothing but a big headache all summer.....any thoughts?

Nope. I certianly would not either, they are tied side by side? Think of the scratches/damage if their fenders aren't on correctly.

New owner at the marina.----Sounds like an attempt to cash in on the supply / demand for all the interest in boating.----Does the marina staff move these boats around along with taking responsibility for dock lines and fenders ?----=Sheltered location or out in the open ?----Size and style of boats involved.?----Do you have to have woolly slippers when going on other boats ?

Its a government built wharf with floating docks run by the town. No staff moving boats, just the boat owners. Nobody has responsibility for fenders, ropes etc except the people who own them. Boats mostly 19 to 25 ft or so and definitely no wooly slippers!

Yeah, far as I know they will be tied side by side and you are at the mercy of how good the fenders are. Its a very sheltered spot inside a breakwater, but still....not for me.

That kind of berthing no doubt works great when you have a trained Navy crew managing it. Maybe not so much if you have to entrust Joe Weekendboater to get it right...

That is a very very bad idea. So much can go way wrong in that situation. No way would I berth my boat there.

Since you're renting half a slip, the rate is 50% of last year's rate with a small inflationary increase. Right?

Maybe next year they will discover Med Mooring and be able to increase the number of rentals by another 30 percent or so. I would love to have the video rights for that circus.

I had to look up "med mooring", ha that would be worth watching. as long as your boat was in the middle of it!. I saw 2 guys come in a large heavy open fishing boat a couple of years ago whose inboard motor was removed and the had an outboard instead with only a tiller handle for steering. The person steering couldn't see around the wheel house of the boat and was relying on his buddy to look around the side of the wheel house and give him directions. Needles to say that was a bad idea. They came into the wharf too fast and hit another boat moored to the wharf. You could hear the crunch all around the harbor! Lucky for them the guy they hit was their nephew so he couldn't get too mad. He was in his boat at the time and told me he actually saw the side of his boat bend in and bounce back! It was an open fishing boat. The only lasting damage was some cracks that were easily repaired.

there is a marina here that does that and my old boss used to do that, on a $100k wake boat. Never had anything happen in the couple years he did that, but man no way for me.

The cod fishing season opens here on Saturday, it will be real busy there when that starts. Let the games begin!
