What is everybody using for shade while fishing?
I was considering a bimini top until I saw a Beach Umbrella
I thinking about placing a beach umbrella in a fishing rod holder mounted to my transom

Go with the bimini. Positioning an umbrella would be difficult and the force of wind would work against wherever you mount it.

There are rectangular tent like with middle pole which inserts on a floor base (must be epoxy glued) has 4 side strings to secure to sib's side, transom and bow, so doesn't blow away with wind. Comes in different sizes.

Moons back used to have a light beach umbrella, pole was secured to side of middle bench seat, a wooden donut like was epoxy glued at pole's end for unbrella to remain at a upright position. With light wind worked perfectly, you could add some strings to umbrella to secure it to sib's sides. Can't be compared to a nice summer shade a bimini top produces.

If you place a umbrella attached to transom, depending on sun position, half of the shade could be off just shading your engine, if you're a fishing Gondolier who likes fishing next to transom, a umbrella is what you need. Rod fishing under a bimini could be unconfortable specially with a long rod.

Re: Shade for a Sib

Turns out i needed both
I ordered this Bimini for use when I am not fishing

And I have an umbrella for when I fish unless I can figure out how to cast with the Bimini top up.
I tried to get the top from here but the ordered required me to order separate pieces.
The S. E. Top came with all the pieces and free shipping

My Bimini top came yesterday.
I was trying to get one from I boats but this deal was too good to pass up

I had the boss sit in her blue reclining chair to make sure it met her approval.
I will play with it some more this weekend

It's really small
It breaks completely down and can really be folded up with the boat.
Now I'm working on a new console based off of a cooler that is an extra seat and holds the fish I catch

Ronaldj,

How are the bimini poles supported against tubes ? probably will neeed to add a extra belt from front bimini to bow if planning to go wot cruising with bimini deployed, will need to inflate tubes to near its max working pressure so poles doesn't flex downwards against tubes when encountering wind. Sometimes will need to be deployed and folded at back engine specially on medium to hard headwinds.

Those bimini are the cheapo ones as opposed to stainless steel ones which costs both eyes and a nose to buy, if wanting long live the bimini apply water grease with small brush where both poles locks together, including internal and external spring locking mechanism, will prevent salt corrotion and gettting jammed if planning leaving bimini assembled for long time periods.

Sheathe all 6 alum poles with 3M electic tape wrap arround merry go round procedure, will prevent environmental light alum pole degradation and last for years to come. If bimini top is a 2 part fabric, with sun, heat expect blisters and lower fabric peeling away from upper one.

Thanks for the fish finder info, but don't use those gadgets, still using nets and sometimes dynamite to fish the whole fish school in one single mean action...

Happy Boating

I agree with you.
I will incorporate your ideas
I am also going to reinforce the poles with some cooper pipe I have laying around.
I wanted SS like you I wasn't prepared to donate any body parts to get it.
When I actually tied it down it pasted the hardest test it will get.
My wife was in the boat and grabbed the Bimini poles to pull herself out of the boat

Don't know about pulling oneself out, don't try pulling yourself in speciall when on water, poles being light will bend or break as has happened...

Mines aren't SS, to heavy and costly, been using same for the last 6 years, wrapping them with tape is fantastic, lasts looooong, if constantly used as factory delivered will hardly last one year. Spring mechanism is delicate, grease well.
