Re: Setting my 89 Doral Classic mercruiser v6/205 on fire.

Our motors are something like car motors from the 70's and 80's as far as starting and running. But there are number of unique things you need to pay attention to that are nothing like a car.
Read the stickies at the top of the Mercruiser forum. There is so much info in there that will clarify most of this stuff for you.

No don't replace the pump unless you find gas in the clear line. If it's empty you are good to go.

Those are core plugs, some folks mistakenly call theme freeze plugs. If you JB'd by that it was the outer water jacket that you fixed.
Keep an eye out for other leaks. Your block is probably ruined, but some folks do a water jacket repair and go on for a long time.
Since the motor is questionable stay out of the ocean and no great lakes, carry a radio and cell phone, and make sure your bilge pump works. Get towing insurance. It's the best money you can spend. Inland lakes coverage like I have is $68.

I stay on small ****ty lakes. It had a crack in the water jacket when I bought it 1500 off a family friend and they had it welded years ago and it's been fine. Why would my block probably be ruined?. I see no other damages or anything just that one spot then the other one that was welded years ago but they look fine
I've been googling for hours trying to figure out the names of those damn plugs so thanks for that. What's the point of them?. So the sound that came from that pin prick hole was a pressure water spray sound, so there's supposed to be water in there?.

Would a leak in water jacket like that make it run like junk?.

Core plug is to cover the whole required in the mfg process as to how the metal is molded. Do much reading and advanced searches on this forum, and keep a journal of what you have done. Open choke plate on the carb and push throttle to make sure your accelerator pump is squirting fuel down the throat of the carb. Check for spark. Get an inline spark tester from auto store. Check each plug. If unsure about blowing up, place a fan blowing towards engine, on high. Get your results and come back.

Ok I'm back, so I checked the spark and yes it there. So I poured gas into the carb and it startd just fine, I could even manage to keep it going by pouring fuel in the carb. So I had it idling, once I gave it some gas tho it died, suggestions?.

Well, looks like you have a fuel problem. Have someone pump the throttle while you look down the carb. You should see gas squirting in, although if this was happening then the boat would start. Disconnect the fuel line just before the carb and see if you have fuel there. Try again while cranking. This will tell you if your problem is the carb or before.

be carefull with you hand or face near the carb opening when you (or someone else) try and start it. Remember.... the flame arrestor is OFF... and a backfire would be inches from you.....

Just be aware of it so you don't lose your eyebrows and boxer shorts ..

7 psi from fuel pump. Other then that I'm thinking a carb rebuild kit.

Pull the carb apart and soak it.
I use a 5 gallon bucket of Gunk Solder Seal carb cleaner. Then hose it off (don't get that cleaner on your skin or on any paint!) and blow all the passages with compressed air. Pay attention to the idle circuit and accel pump.

I took it out already and I'm picking a rebuild kit up on wed . I'm might as well do it when it's out I guess. Is 6 psi normal ish for fuel pump?.

I would recommend calling in a professional. While there are several things you can do , you do need to know for the most part how things work. I/we might mention something and in the normal process see nothing with it but if you don't know the basics there could be some dangerous and catastrophic out comes.
amen to that - would be sadly ironic if the boat did end up on fire with starting fluid etc.
gooping JB weld on stuff is just going to make it more expensive when the pro gets to it.
