How is the idle speed set on a 1980 40hp Merc? It idles too slow and stalls when coming into the dock in neutral. I don't see any way to do it except to shorten the throttle cable. I can increase the idle speed by using the start/throttle lever.

Idle speed is done by turning up idle timing....if you don't know what you are doing don't touch the different linkages as you can get it out of whack..buy the manual...very easy to do in the water where it should be done since the water will affect the idle speed.
