Hi all again,

Since I got some time, I take out the motor of the boat and build a stative for it in order to start working on it inside of a garage.
This is about this motor -

And managed to buy this manual for it

Even so, I have some questions and also want to share my experience, maybe can be usefully to others.

1 - I take again (4th time since I bough it :) ) compression for all 3 cylinders and after I saw that it looks good I decided to go further and do a kind of restoration / maintenance / service job on it.

cyl1 -

cyl2 -

cyl3 -

2 - When I started last time and let it run for about few minutes into a barrel with water I noticed that I have some leaks in this area (seems to be water)

So of course I take out the side panels in order to replace gaskets and also I hoped to find here the thermostat as well, but there I got a surprise by didn t found the thermostat neither the pop valve. Probably previous owner run without it ?
Is my assumption correct in this picture?

Also these are more pictures of this side

3 - During take out the plate from the carbs I noticed this hose which didn t had anything connected to it. Can this be from the oil mixer ? Can I remove it at all? Or is something else?

4 - Before start working on the motor, in order to be prepared for the last part of tuning I bought a stroboscope for set the timing and also a set of vacuum gauges for sync carbs, but when I removed the carbs, I don t see any vacuum port ..
Do anyone know where the vacuum ports are for this motor?

Thanks a lot to all, and probably there will be more questions during my process of restore this engine...

Throttle plates are CLOSED at idle.------Your manual will explain synchronizing of throttle opening and ignition advance.----Read it and understand it before making any adjustments !

If you're going to be turning it over at starting speed to check things put the spark plugs in their boots and ground them to the block - I used a piece of solid copper wire. While the exhaust plate is off you could spray some engine cleaner into the cylinders, the pistons look like they have varnish build-up. Power Tune is a good choice.
Is there a timing decal on the flywheel?

My technical english maybe is not so good, so I will try to rephrase in order to be sure I understood correctly what you tell me:
Basically you say to crank the motor and put cleaner in cylinders ?

Yes there is timing on the flywheel, I need to check that TDC is on right place (to be sure that if it was removed, it was put back correct )

Thanks a lot for help

Flywheel only fits one way.----Timing does not change by removing and putting the flywheel back on.

Somebody might have undone the bolts instead of using a puller.

I'm saying that if you are going to turn the motor with the starter ground the plugs to the block.
You can clean the pistons one at a time - when the rings are visible in the exhaust ports, just turn the flywheel.

Agreed----There are many , many folks who do not know how to remove a Mercury flywheel !!

"3 - During take out the plate from the carbs I noticed this hose which didn't had anything connected to it."
I believe that it is part of the oil/crankcase bleed system, clean the screen and put it back into that hole.
If you are going to run it as a constant use motor replace the thermostat and poppet valve and any other original parts.

Yeah, This is what i did actually because I wanted to see the stator. I tried with a puller but seems that didn t moved at all and was afraid to try harder. Anyway I will try to get TDC on the mark soon.

Ok, now its clear. I will clean them in this step by turning flywheel by hand (all other parts are not on the motor now ...I check them, clean them etc)

Thanks for the tip.

I am not using the oil mixer, I use directly mixed gasoline so that s why I asked if I just can give up to that hose

As you see in my picture seems this motor hasn t any thermostat or pop valve on it. I guess this is the place where they should be

Is that correct ?

Depending on serial number most of those do not have t-stat or poppet, also get a factory manual.

Serial is - C188478
But even so, is wrong if I put thermostat and the popet valve even if it hasn t ?

Also do you have any idea what should be fitted in that empty space from the picture ?

Thanks

You dont not want a t-stat, these engines have enough problem's with cooling.

But why is the placeholder there ?
Is wrong if I buy a thermostat and pop valve? I haven t had any 2 stroke (actually any outboard) till now, but I know on the car is very important the thermostat in order to keep the engine to a proper temp (not too cold I mean)

That block design has been used for years.....your year model does not use a t-stat or poppet. Clean up the plates and reinstall with new gaskets and get it wet.
