hi all

i have a serious problem with my mariner 40hp i think its a 74model its a 402..

the other day i started it and ran fine then all the sudden it stop.. tried starting it and just backfired so i took the flywheel off to check the stator and seen that the key was sheared.replaced the key it started ...now its got this terrible sound coming out of the engine near the bottom leg i thought it might be the gearbox packed it in took that off and haven't pulled it apart yet but ...on quick inspection seemed fine the only other thing i can think of is it may be the bearing on the crank shaft that the gerabox spline goes thru....
any suggestions on what may be causing the noise ...sounds like a grinding noise type thing,...

any sugestions or help would be appreciated.

I think that what ever caused the key to shear also broke something in your geartrain, Rod.

Re: serious unknown problem

The old 402's are bad about breaking crank at top journal, mostly due to improper rpm's...
