serial number search

I have been trying to use my serial number to confirm my engine ID. It's an 18HP 18XD model.
From the lists I have found, it has to be from the early 80s as it seems Mercury only made the 18 for a few years then. I have found the diagrams etc. I need this way.

However, the serial number lists I have seen all show 7 digit numeric numbers starting with 5 or 6 for the 18s. My serial number is A117874.

Does anyone know of a current SN search for Mercury?

The MaxRules.com site could be another place to check. Could it be possible that the 'A' in the serial number is actual a number, just hard to read?

It looks like the 18HP models were from 1980 - 85. Could the engine actually be a different HP?

1984 was a transition year, from the old serial number system, to the new.

1818XD2-cyl6443973 through0A1347301984
