Selling a Boat?

What's the typical turn-around time you've had? What method did you sell it?

I've had my '99 Legacy SeaEra 192 Center Console boat for sale forever (or at least that's what it feels like) and I haven't gotten that much interest. I've tried boat trader and eBay, and hung a bunch of signs around town. Hardly any calls. I wanna sell this boat so we can get into a sailboat. I mean, it's a great boat - the only thing I can think of is people are having a bit of problems researching the make because it's a sub-division of SeaFox that doesn't exist anymore. Just getting bummed out :(

Have you checked prices on similar boats in your area? There is usually a difference, sometimes a considerable difference between book value and market value. If you have had it for sale for a long time and have had little interest I would think that the price may be to high. If a boat shows well and looks like it has been cared for I don't think the brand is all that important to a lot of buyers.

It sounds silly but try eBay. Set a reserve and list it. It'll cost about what an ad would cost you and I guarantee lots of people will see it.

I've sold equipment to people as far away as South Korea using eBay.

UFM82

Re: Selling a Boat?

Thanks for the reply guys.

We have lowered the price significantly since we started posting. The blue book is around 12,500, so we started at 11,000. We have it down to 9,000 now. It's loaded with options, so I think at that price, it's a steal.

Some of the people who have come and viewed it have asked us about the name, and the history. It's a Legacy, but it was made by SeaFox, which are decent boats.

We're located in Key West, so this is a huge boating community, but stuff doesn't sell so well here. And we're far away from, say Miami, that people up there don't want to drive the 3 or so hours to look at it. And we don't have a vehicle that can tow the car, so it's not like we can go and meet someone (we keep it on a rack at a marina).

We've tried eBay... twice. People don't want to pay more than $6,000 for it, which is really low-balling us, if you ask me. And no one came in person to check it out in that time - which makes me nervous. We described every nook and cranny, but so many people on eBay expect to pay for a Chevy and get a Cadilliac. And I've talked with a lot of sellers that have attempted to sell a boat on there, and the high bidder either blows them off, or doesn't come through in the end, because of that reason.

I'm just getting ansy because we found a sailboat in Miami we really want, but we have to get rid of this boat first.

Re: Selling a Boat?

Have you checked with a Marina/Dealer in your area about selling it on consignment? It sucks to pay the commission but if it's not moving it may be time to try something different. In my area that is a pretty common way to sell boats because the Marinas usually have a web page and knowlegeable sales people. :p

Re: Selling a Boat?

Hi Meg.

Please consider trying us here at iboats.com and you'll sell your boat...without your having to drop the price below what it's worth! (And you'll help support iboats and this Forum at the same time.)

It costs just $49.95 to list your boat in our Classifieds on iboats.com for a full MONTH...where over 4 million visitor sessions happen every month...(and your ad is also shown on our other 500+ marine-related web sites [like www.boatmotors.com and ]www.FloridaUsedBoats.com] and at no additional cost to you)!

But that's not all...you can include up to 5 pictures of your boat in that ad, plus all the written information you want to include, all at no added cost. A tip...we find that adding a number of pictures REALLY helps to sell your boat much faster! In fact, those who spend another $9.95 with us can add up to 20 pictures total...and those who do that sell their boat twice as fast on average, as long as they are asking a reasonable price!

It's easy to do this on our site at iboats.com, but if you need some help with doing this, call us toll free at 1-800-869-1686 and then enter extension 106 to talk with Curt, our Classifieds Manager. He'll be happy to help you! And if you tell him that BV sent you, he'll take off 10% for your being a Forum member! :)

Best of success in selling your boat!

BV

Well, I know I was WAY lucky...but I posted my boat on craigslist.com and within 15 minutes got an email...guy came out...looked at it and bought it on the spot. I only had one other "interested" party and they wanted to trade an old truck for it. I happened to find the right person at the right time.

Craigslist is free and allows you to post 4 pictures. They limit each ad to 7 days and it is by area so you will be targeting people near you. Just make sure you select your area first...the default is San Fransico Area...which might be a hike for anybody seeing your ad.

-JMW
