After looking for quite some time for a repairable MFG, in a bit more than a month, I've come across two. First my '65 Edinboro, now this afternoon, I found a pretty clean Niagara. This one isn't as minty as the Edinboro but it's a rock solid hull with no signs of damage. The floor is solid, the transom seems ok but I will pull the rear panel to check it over really well. It was in use when I found it but the guy wanted a slighter larger, sportier looking boat. He said he had found a hull and was swapping everything over. If I wanted the hull, I could have it when he was done. The Niagara came home with me today.

The seats are cheap Walmart pedestals with plastic fold down seats, the trailer a 2001 Load Rite bunk trailer, and the windshield is plastic.
The gel coat is perfect with only a nick or two on the keel up above the bow eye area. It's got some fade, but not bad, a good wet sand and buff will bring it right back. It's missing the rubber from the lower hull side rub strips.

It has brand new zero feed back Teleflex steering, fish finder and new horn.

The only two things I've seen that seem odd are that it has two bow hook eyes? Both are identical, both look to be original or at least as old as the boat, and they are about 7" apart. One falls above the trailer bow stop, the other just below. Looking at the inside bow area shows four well rusted nuts retaining both bow eyes onto a flatted portion of he inner bow area. The outer bow area where each of these bow eyes mount is also flatted slightly to allow the bow eye to seat flat. One eye for winching the boat, the other for the turnbuckle or safety chain? Or a spare just in case?

The second was how roomy the Niagara is even when compared to the 16' 6" long Edinboro I have. The interior length is less than a foot shorter than the larger boat. The beam width is only about 4" narrower than the larger Edinboro. This is due to the fact that the windshield and drivers position on the Niagara are so much farther forward in proportion to the larger model.

I haven't had either in the water yet, I just brought the Niagara home today, my Edinboro is at my shop. I'll probably redo the transom in the Niagara in the spring, it feels ok but when I pulled the top cap the wood looks a bit dark. It's like the Edinboro, the wood doesn't fill the space between the inner and outer glass tightly anymore. Either the wood has some rot or it's dried out and shrunk somehow. I did drive the Niagara before the last guy pulled his motor but only for a bit. I like the bow design and how well it goes through the water.

Here's a couple of pics, they're too big to post here so I'll post links:

The biggest thing that looks out of place is the modern, black vinyl steering wheel, while it's functional, it don't look right.
The deck will need some screw holes properly filled and two new seats. I'll most likely put in a pair of pedestal seats for now.

I started with a gutted interior and have used solid back up front , and folding seats up back . All have swivels too . Works well for me. I know the backs were Attwood's from wally world -The fronts I'd have to look up, I got from Boaters world

I see yours is minus the windshield, I'm considering doing the same on this one or finding a glass replacement. I've never been a big fan of plastic windshields, their way too hard to see through and don't give enough support when attaching a soft top to them.

Mine will most likely end up waiting till next spring due the the lower temperatures, the shop is heated but not well enough to do any glass work, or at least not long enough to let it properly cure.

I'll spend some time thinking about how I want this to look before starting, I want to go with two pedestal seats with swivels mainly to free up as much space as I can. I will most likely use the 40 HP Mercury I have here, it's near mint and a perfect fit for this boat. For the time being, I may run just an electric motor on it and use it in the local lakes and ponds till I get a chance to redo the transom properly.

The windshield on this one is too far gone for polishing, it's plenty clear but has thousands of tiny cracks in it. The crazing is in the plastic not on the surface.
A new piece is the only option. I'd really like to find a glass window option, I've always had trouble seeing through bent or curved glass or plexi. I'd rather not have a windshield than to have to constantly look over it or around it.

I may give Mark42's advice a shot and try using a piece of Lexan if I can't find a suitable glass windshield. One concern however is that I don't think a Niagara will look right with a square corner glass windshield.

I do have a new (In box) old stock wind shield .:) I've got too much surface work to do to the glass over the bow to justify putting it on and taking it back off. Next spring I hope to make everything pretty and mount the windshield. Personaly I'm kinda likeing no windshield ,too

Re: Second MFG - 1966 Niagara

My biggest problem with having a windshield is that I sit too tall in the boat, at 6' 3" tall I sit looking right at the top frame, I have to look over or under to see clearly. I find myself constantly kneeling on the seat to drive, or sitting on the back of the seat. Without a windshield I can just sit down and be comfortable.
I think a lot has to do with the fact that I ran a bass boat for years with no windshield and never got used to having one.
The one benefit I do see is that it keeps the bugs out of your face when running at night.

...or when you are trying to keep out of a steady wind when fishing with temps in the 20's :)

I know this was an old post but I was looking up some stuff and came across this discussion.

I used 16" pedestals for the seats in my 14' Niagara, and when sitting straight upright I am looking over the window frame. Sitting straight up, I am out of the airstream when planed out, but I have to duck down when running 30 mph in the rain.

I did polish my windshield with a cotton bonnet on a 2000 rpm drill head. Worked out very good, but 6 years later, now, I should do it again.
