Yep, the starter and cover look the same as the 2 hp and the twin cylinder block looks similar, but not identical, to the 4R. The external ignition coil might be from an ET or energy transfer ignition system like the ones on the '74-'77 9.9 and 15hp motors.<br /><br />It looks like the motor was made from a collection of standard parts and that version was never US made from what I can remember.

I have a 84 4hp, and the block looks the same. And you should not have pulled that center Phillips screw, as you can see now that the recoil will need to be rewound.

Jep... Looks like Johnson put all spare parts to container, sent to Belgium and put together... It's good enough for Europe... <br /><br />BTW, What do you call that blue piece that makes spark (there are two of them)? What are its specifications? Can anybody provide me any informations? The blue piece is an ignition coil....you need one per cylinder.

Coil, coil, coil... That word was missing in my vocabulary... I mean, in my head.. <br />In Slovene language is "condensator" or in German "Zündspulle".<br /><br />Thanks. I looked at a translation web site for "Zündspulle" and wasn't able to get an English word. I don't speak German or Slovene. Your word "condensator" sounds much like the English word for "condenser" which is the older word for a capacitor. The condenser looks like a small tin can with a single wire coming out of one end. The condenser is typically mounted with a single screw or metal strap to ground (case grounded). The condenser is wired in parallel with the breaker points and helps to prevent the points from pitting and helps to insure a hot spark at the moment when the points open . The condenser(s) are mounted under the flywheel , near the breaker points.<br /><br />You said, <br /><br />"And which quantities are measurable here? This value is not too critical, I don't recall exact values , but fractional micro farad seems right.<br /><br />The ignition coils (blue parts in your picture) are basically wire wound transformers with a primary and secondary winding. The primary winding is charged by the spinning flywheel magnets. When this primary current is interrupted by the opening of the breaker points, voltage is induced thru the secondary windings producing a high voltage to fire the spark plug. This is an over simplification of the process , but you get the idea.<br /><br />The whole point here is to try to explain that the "condenser" and "ignition coil" are two different parts and perform entirely different functions.

You might try taking an original coil to your supplier and have them match it. Looking at pictures of your coils, it looks like part number 18-5192. Your dealer should be able to tell you more.

Hmmm. We DO NOT have supllier who'd have such old original spare parts.... Company that imports OMC outboards to Slovenia (and Croatia and some more countries) has spare parts only for motors to seven years olds.Because we have some brands of outboards also here in Slovenia (for example Tomos)I'll try to find a coil from Tomos which could fit to Johnson. <br /><br />Thanks for number and bye, Uros

I know of a couple European online businesses that sell the aftermarket (competitor made) coil 18-5192. I would be surprised that you dealer couldn't supply the factory coil 582091. Both are still being manufactured - both the aftermarket one and the factory one. I think the aftermarket is actually made in Germany.<br /><br />By the way, we do occasionally get Tomos questions here especially about parts and service manuals. Can you recommend (or even just suggest) a place that could supply them?

Hi Rafter, I happen to have a 4hp just like yours. Finding a manual will be a challenge, I have access to the amercian made specs, they are definately different from the belgian made. It is indeed a conglomerate of parts from different years, but the ignition parts are common and easily obtained. I do know for a fact that the drive shafts are not the same as i have measured a 74 american made 4hp drive shaft and my belgian made 74 4hp drive shaft and they are different sizes! It is a really wonderful little motor and well worth the effort to fix up. I have a bent driveshaft (the previous owner backed into a fence and broke the lower unit in half) that I need to replace, but can't find the correct part number for, so I too spend a lot of time searching for parts.
