Searching For Carbs 1984 85hp Force

I purchased a 1984 Bayliner with an 85hp Force out of the U.S. 2 years ago and it's been excellent until this year.

I took it out this spring and found that although everything seemed fine at idle and slow speeds I lost power at higher RPM's.

My boat tech changed out the head gasket (very slight leakage), checked compression (all 3 cylinders in good shape), checked the coils and everything electrical related, changed all fuel lines and installed a fuel pump kit. Nothing resolved the problem.

My tech finally realized that the needle and seat assembly that normally has a tolerance of .078 was reduced to less than .060 causing the engine to run out of fuel at WOT. This was caused by the alcohol in our Canadian fuel causing the neoprene in the seats to swell up.

The carbs that are on my boat have the press-in needle and seat assembly. This assembly is very difficult to acquire and apparently difficult to replace according to my tech.

So now I'm looking for 3 carbs to fit this motor (that have the screw-in style needle and seat assembly) or any suggestions from you guys that I can pass on to my tech as to how to resolve this problem.

Please help. The summer is getting away from me and I can't enjoy my boat.

Look into your needle valve well and see if you see something green. If you do, it is an O ring and can be changed. The new rings are black and don't react with the ethanol fuel. You can pull the oring out with a thin piece of wire or a dental pick. New ones are available from any of the parts houses on the web.

I have the 3 carbs that came on the used 88' 85hp powerhead I got at the marina. They must have pieced it together because the carbs are from 84'. Anyway i'm not sure you'd want these. Looked like they were sitting for years and years and the inside of the carbs past the throttle shutters looked a bit rusty. Maybe that's why I cant get the new block started? Dirty reeds! Also the linkages between the carbs was sticky and wouldnt close all the way unless I did it by hand which is why I reused my 86' carbs. They're clean and move freely. Same with the choke it's pretty sticky. Maybe they'll work if your tech completely disassembles them and cleans them out. Or if he gets yours to work and you need some spares let me know I don't need them. I don't want any spare parts because I'm going to repower with an Evinrude 90hp E-Tec when I get the spare cash. 84' 15ft Bayliner Capri bowrider.

Where are you located, Jason32038? I'd like to arrange something on the extra carbs that you have.

I had the same problem with mine last year. Make sure your mechanic checks the power packs because back in the day mechanics use to discount one of the power packs. Also you probably want to get your carbs rebuilt to. Hopefully that will solve your problem.
