found water in my lu and found that it came from the impeller housing and pushed gear oil out the top of the unit and filled up with water. i noticed the drive shaft moves up and down, i don't think this is wright, and the gears grind when trying to put in gear.I assume complete rebuild, but if possible id like to do it as cheap as i can. no major metal when drained. could the bearings be alright. I think this just started to happen.

The drive shaft will move up and down a little bit. You probably need new lower unit seals (driveshaft, shift rod, o-rings). these are not expensive to replace. The gear grinding you hear can be from the lack of grease and the mixture of the water. )When you shift from neutral to forward (or reverse) do it with a firm and quick movement. Don't try to"slide" the gears together. I would avoid using the motor until you address this issue.
