Sealant or no sealant

I have an early 80's 35hp. The gasket underneath the coverplate (where the spark plugs screw in) does not appear to have had any sealant on it. When I replace it with the new gasket should I use any kind of sealer?

We have always used a thin layer of number 2 prematex around the plugs

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense, since it blew out at the sparkplug.
