I'm replacing the deck on this boat. The front livewell has an access hatch in the deck, the livewell plastic tub is actually pop-riveted to the aluminum stringers, and there is a putty-like "tape" (flat, 1" wide, 1/16" thick, uniform width, flakes off like putty when pulled up with fingernail) around the rim of the tub that must be the seal between it and the deck that contains the hatch. Would peeling this old seal off and just using a thick bead of 3M 4200 be an acceptable alternative seal between the livewell and the deck? Thanks.

Not really.

You might be best to look around for a new weatherstrip and attach it.

The 4200 will really not be the solution

Any suggestions? What properties of the 4200 make it unsuitable for this application? Thanks.

By the way, this is to provide a seal between the plastic livewell tub flange and the bottom side of the plywood deck. It is a semi-permanent seal that only gets separated when the deck above the livewell is removed. It is not the seal between the hatch frame and the hatch door.
