SeaFoam Idea

I'm getting ready to fog my motor,1981 175hp and had a thought that i want to run by the Johnny-Rude pros here.
I did the Decarb twice last spring and still have a lot of carbon on the piston heads.
I had my exhaust cover off a few months ago and it had at least 1/4 inch of carbon build up on it.
I cleaned it with Deep Creep before i put it back together.

Question is,Would it help to load the cylinders up with Seafoam and let it set over the winter? I know most of it will run out the exhaust ports but i was thinking about once a month or so i would spray them again.
Would this hurt anything?

seafoam is not going to hurt it, but doesn't it need the heat for it to work correctly.

Re: SeaFoam Idea

Thats a good point TD..
I thought if it soaked all winter it would help break it up when i run it in the spring.
The motor had heavy build up bad when i got it. Been running Seafoam in the fuel all summer too.
Pulled the plugs today and they were black and oily.It seems to run fine and only smokes when its cold.

I was never able to get the shiney clean pistons even after 2 decarbs.

So,,,Bad idea i guess.
I'll just give it a major decarb come spring. The first run will be with my 6 gallon portable tank loaded with premix and seafoam..:)

Re: SeaFoam Idea

gary, i'm sure you have seen this.

Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, replace plugs, let sit 15 minutes. restart, and spray the rest of the seafoam into the carbs, so the the motor almost stalls, wait and repeat until the seafoam is gone.then take for a wide open spin. then put in new plugs, ad premixed gas to the tank, and take it for a wide open throttle spin. it is going to smoke like a house on fire, during this process.

deep creep and seafoam are the same thing, deep creep is just pressurized.

Yes,Thanks TD

This past spring i did both decarbs on the muffs.Maybe it just did not get hot enough to clean it well.It did smoke like crazy and had the whole neighborhood looking.
I will take my portable tank mixture to the lake next time.;)

I run one boat with BRP XD100 and the other with Yamaha Ring Free. Comparing the 2, Ring Free is hands down more effective.

I'd try some Ring Free next season instead of Seafoam. You probably can then forget about the decarb.

I don't understand any relationship between Yamaha Ring Free and BRP XD-100.

XD-100 is a synthetic oil for E-tec motors that are programmed to use it.
To the best of my knowledge, BRP does not represent XD-100 as a carbon treatment.

BRP XD-50 does advertise that it contains CarbX, a carbon treatment.

BRP's equivalent of Ring Free is Carbon Guard. I use either one depending on price at the time I buy.

Re: SeaFoam Idea

Hi GaryH. All the motors I have here seem to be fairly clean and the motors that have passed thru my hands have not been bad so the need for seafoam has not been an issue. However Tashasdaddy is correct and heat is the thing. I am here in Monroe and have my small shop at the house. If you want to make contact call me. EDIT:

TD has the best way to decarb ... you should get plenty of dark smoke for the first few minutes of hard running if the motor has significant carbon build up, but don't expect shiny clean metal, just free of major carbon. Adding decarbonizer to a full gas tank is largely a waste of time and money, although a lot of people do it.

Thanks for the advise Gary. Have Edited. I work on most anything. Evin/John, Mercs, Yamaha and Suzuki. I stay as a small operation, being retired dont need a lot of work. Get a lot of pleasure out of it. Got a bunch ready to go now, all kinds of sizes.

Re: SeaFoam Idea

Just a note for all, Seafoam does work cold. I have used it at the shop where I work. A small amount in a pan with pistons turned upside down in it over night will help the carbon to come off easily. I have used a similar product to clean the egr tube on Mercedes engines which fills with carbon, really hard to get to so the chemical cleaning allws me to do it in place. I would suggest doing a decarb before storage as the carbon will harden naturally over the winter and be even more trouble to get out later.
