Re: SE116 Drive.Forward gear gone
Are you running the Merc Hi performanc gear lube in the drive? My mechanic advised me to run that in my Cobra and he said that he sees much less wear in drives that have been run on it.
It doesn't sound like you have to get rid of the boat, but the idea of the drive shower is worth trying. Why not put on the old drive, fill it with Merc Hi Perf gear oil and put on the shower. Keep an eye on the gear oil condition and maybe change it twice as often as you would under normal usage. That might buy you some time, since you are set up for Merc the only logical step up is a Bravo swap. You probably wouldn't have trouble selling off your Alpha stuff, just look how many guys on here are looking to convert OMC Cobra powered boats over to Merc Alphas!
As an aside, one thing I liked about the Cobra is that it holds a lot of gear oil compared to the early Alphas, 2 qts. I don't know for sure it they actually ran cooler but when I have changed the gear oil it never looked burnt.
