Re: SE116 Drive.Forward gear gone

Are you running the Merc Hi performanc gear lube in the drive? My mechanic advised me to run that in my Cobra and he said that he sees much less wear in drives that have been run on it.
It doesn't sound like you have to get rid of the boat, but the idea of the drive shower is worth trying. Why not put on the old drive, fill it with Merc Hi Perf gear oil and put on the shower. Keep an eye on the gear oil condition and maybe change it twice as often as you would under normal usage. That might buy you some time, since you are set up for Merc the only logical step up is a Bravo swap. You probably wouldn't have trouble selling off your Alpha stuff, just look how many guys on here are looking to convert OMC Cobra powered boats over to Merc Alphas!
As an aside, one thing I liked about the Cobra is that it holds a lot of gear oil compared to the early Alphas, 2 qts. I don't know for sure it they actually ran cooler but when I have changed the gear oil it never looked burnt.

Just curious...........how much does that boat weigh? What size prop are you turning and what are your WOT #'s?

Like I said, just curious...........my 24' Grady weighs in ~4200lbs. I turn a 4 blade 16" prop and my WOT is ~4600RPM's...........just for comparison.

Gonna try to get merc to cover those. It's been a little over 1 year but,the boat did sit for about 7 months last winter.

Ayuh,....

There's Really only 1 thing that causes flappers to fall apart,....

At some point, sometime,.. The motor was run Without a solid water flow....

You should be able to change them by just loosening Hose Clamps,...
The risers don't need to come off...

Right after I installed the engine driven sea water pump and a flush system, the hose i used for the supply was too soft and the pump sucked it flat.I think I caught it pretty quick though.I'll post a picture tomorrow but when I removed the elbows to expose the flappers, one half was gone(sitting behind the shift shaft)the other half was blown upward toward the riser.Still intact, just facing the wrong way.WTH would cause that?I do remember 1 time when my buddy was running the boat and he just cut the throttle(yes,I immediatly edjamacated him on that move).Would that do it,even with exhaust through prop?Maybe THAT forced both halves up causing restriction and the one half gave out, allowing drainage/flow?I'll take/post pic in the am.I was really schocked to see that.
