Hi everyone, new to forums. I just replaced the water pump on my SE106 Lower unit. When i put the lower unit back on i checked to make sure that everything lined up and that the "quad seal" was in place and new. After tightening the lower unit, I started to fill back up with lube oil and it started leaking out the front weep hole and out of the exhaust on the propeller. I'm wondering whether or not there is a chance that i put the wrong base for the water pump on the lower unit. If so would this cause the issue that I am having. I think the parts for an MR or an R are different then the ones for an alpha. Mercruiser says that the parts are all interchangable between the alpha and the SE106. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they may have done to fix it. I will be pressure testing the lower unit and then the upper unit seperately to see exactly where the leak is coming from. I'm hoping its the O-ring around the base of the water pump. Any help would be appreciated

R, MR, and Alpha 1 are all the same parts. Alpha 1 gen 2 are completely different. I'm not even sure you could put a gen 1 pump on a gen 2.

It may help you if you seperate the units and pressure test it with your thumb over the oil transfer hole, and do the upper and lower seperately. If it's leaking that much you don't need a pressure rig to sit for long.

Did the o-ring that goes between the upper and lower oil transfer hole slip or fall off.J

Re: SE106 Outdrive leaking gear lube

Ok, So i found the problem. The shift shaft seal on the front of the lower unit had an O ring in it but the bushing that the washer holds down that connects to the O ring was gone. When i pressure tested the lower unit holding my thumb over the oil port i got sprayed in the face with gear oil. Problem presented itself rather nicely lol!! I also found that the upper unit has a drive shaft seal on the bottom that was comepletely gone just the spring was left so I pulled off the upper unit also to fix this, got the gimbals out and need to put the new seal in and then reassemble the whole thing. Hopefully it will all work like its supposed to now. After i get the part in the morning will post with the results hope this helps someone else in what to look for. thanx all for your help.
