Re: Scuba + Boating

Yeah the launch pass isn't that bad, they have running water, the guys are pretty helpful, they have nice bathrooms and showers. Last time I got a 10% discount card for Bazil's but didn't get it this tiem as the new mgt said it is only for slip renters. The two best things are it is right across the street from where I store the boat so I don't have to trailer my boat 6 miles. Also since it is a little pricer to launch there, not that many people use it. Most often I am the only person there, on a nice day there might be 1 other person launching. On a "busy" holiday weekend maybe 2 people ahead of you. I guess I pay about $500 for the launch pass and storage.

It takes me about 15-20 minutes from attaching the trailer to being underway. I am usually quicker than people at the Marina, because they have to move all their stuff from the car down the dock to their boat and back. I just toss stuff from my SUV into the boat. You also don't get all the waterfoul and bugs dirtying your boat up when it is stored on land.

The big reason I would rent a slip is to be social and so I don't really have to worry about trailering etc. They both have the advantages. The main reason I am trailering is saving money. The worst part is crossing traffic on Empire Blvd

I got a 2000 19ft Maxum Cuddy last year, I love it! It's nice to find other people with similar interests.

Nice boat!

Sounds like you have a pretty good deal going at that Marina! It's funny you mentioned that the reason you want a slip is to be social. When I had a slip @ Sutter's I found people to be rather unfriendly...could just be that location.

My biggest reason for a dock/slip is just ease of getting out there. I find I use the boat so much more when I don't have to trailer it. I'm more prone to stopping by after work and taking her out. So much less to do.

Def good to find others with similar interests. I don't know many other divers around but nice hear you're around and on the bay.

Was hoping to get out there today after work but the weather is looking questionable.

Re: Scuba + Boating

Thanks,

So sutter's wasn't that great, the guy I bought my boat from use to dock there? At South Point the people seem nice to give you a hand even when you might not really need it. I don't mind, just happy that many of them are kind. It feels odd walking by people and most of them say hello or waves. I was use to that down south, but not so much up here in NY. Duno, maybe people pay the higher rate to get away from the guys that are jerks, <shrug>.

I try to use my boat two+ times a week. I generally go out on Sundays with some friends as the g/f works on Sunday. If I stored the boat at my house, I wouldn't be out on it as much. Maybe in a year or two I will try renting a slip and see how it goes. Oddly enough I find it more frustating w/ my g/f than when I have friends helping. I will have to paint my hull w/ anti-fouling paint.

I work and boat in Webster, but I live in F-port. I also do some water sports, but most of my friends are married w/ kids or couch potatoes, so that makes it a little difficult to do those.

Well I'm not trying to shoot down Sutter's as a marina but my experience with the other boaters there wasn't very social.

Re: Scuba + Boating

Yeah thanks for the tips, just went to my first lesson yesterday. Aced the test/review, but so did everyone else. Oddly enough I think I was more prepared than anyone else in the class. At first the instructor said I needed no weight, but I got annoyed when he told us to go prone on the bottom, but I couldn't. He said I needed to do is relax and I am a pretty relaxed person. Only way I could start to decend was w/ no air in my lungs. After he gave me 2 weights I finally could go prone w/ air in my lungs. When we went to the 8ft deep part of the pool, managing my bouancy was much easier. Other than that I had the wonderful suprise of a free flow 2nd stage, luckily I was in the 3ft deep area.

That was me!!!! I would breath in and begin to float, breath out and I'd remain on the bottom. A 5# weight in my B.C. pocket did the trick. Belive it or not being neurally buoyant does wind up helping you (IMHO). You wind up using less weight than most others in the class, just a little of an effort to get weighting with a wetsuit right (my instructor harped on correct weighting also, as a matter of fact he was rather meticulous about it).

Seriously everyone I know is getting married and pumping out kids. Half the time I go on the boat I go solo which is fine with me. The water is my escape but a buddy or two doesn't hurt.

You ever need a spotter for ski/wakeboard/tube let me know. If it's a nice day chances are I'm out there somewhere already anyway.

I was out on the bay last night on one of the bluffs, the one to the right of the sand bar bluff, now it has two ropes connected to a tree up top. You can repel down or jump out and swing...so much fun! Way better than the tire swing at the other bluff. Even though I did post about those bluffs getting eroded....it's worth a swing or two.

Perfect on the bay last night. Only a couple boats out, flat water and mild temps and no rain!

My advice is always have someone in the boat who knows how to drive the boat. I used to dive off my boat and I had to go get someone that got caught in a current and didn't realize it. They were nearly half a mile away when they surfaced.

If your boat is not set up for diving, things can be a real pain compared to a commercial dive boat. I actually prefer to pay and go on a commercial dive boat more than my own boat these days.

Wait YOU put those ropes up there?

I ski and wakeboard but not off my boat....not powerful enough. I guess I tube too...but that's just holding on and waiting to fall off. Not much skill needed haha.

Re: Scuba + Boating

You should always have at least 3 people to go diving on your own boat. 2 diving and 1 on the boat. One time while under water I noticed a strange shiny thing bouncing on the bottom of the ocean. Turned out to be my anchor. It didn't set correctly. Would of been a bummer to say the least if we ascended to find no boat. This way the person on board can take care of the boat and help with getting the gear back on board. I normally take off the BC/tank while still in the water, tie it to a rope and then pull it up after I get back on the boat. Works well for me. My ladder is not as big as the ones on the commercial boats. Good luck and enjoy

I got my Open Water Dive scheduled for the weekend after the 4th. It sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

Nice! That's this weekend...Did you get into the first AM class?

The quarry is fun for your first open water dive. There are a few cars and a boat down there somewhere. They will probably have you navigate to these. Should see some fish too...some will feed right out of your hand!

The lake is starting to warm up a bit but still pretty chilly. 68-69 when I checked this morning. I have a 70 degree cut off point for diving. Only have a 3mm and I get cold easily.

Good luck this weekend!

Did you get certified?

No, I injured myself on the weekend of the 4th. I have a Level 2 AC seperation, so I had to reschedule it. I am going for a followup on Thursday, hopefully the Dr has good things to say.
