Screw Pen?

Hi, I'm new to boating. I bought a 1984 Chaparral 172 I/O 4 cyl. OMC .
My mechanic says I need a tilt/trim screw pen. Is this a hard to find part because of it's age? The motor will not engage the prop in the water.

Thanks, RedBubba

Re: Screw Pen?

Welcome to iboats.

Have your mechanic get you a proper description and part number and maybe someone here can help. What model outdrive is it?

More information is really needed. OMC outdrives are no longer made but some parts are available.

Re: Screw Pen?

Just guessing, as I am far from a stringer drive mechanic, but I wonder if this screw pin is actually the worm gear and shaft for the tilt motor mechanism.

EDIT: Man, I have to learn how to size pictures when I am using that laptop. That thing is huge.

Re: Screw Pen?

Hey Bob_VT,
I went to see my mechanc today. It is a TR outdrive. The broken part is still on the boat engine. He said the worm gear that controls the trim on the motor was stripped. When you put the engine under load the stripped part disengages the prop. Should I try to find a parts manual for the part number. He doesn't seem to be in any hurry to fix it. I am not a boat mechanic. Should I take it to someone else for repair ? Thanks for your help. RedBubba

It's not for any particular year, just a picture I found trying to figure out what you were looking for.

The motor will not engage the prop in the water.

That part has nothing to do with "engaging the prop in the water". Only for raising and lowering the drive.

OMC 4 cyl. TR drive?
there's a new one :) :) :)
I know the answer to the last question
I'd be burning rubber dragging it elsewhere.

I missed that post to Bob several times

I couldn't imagine a Mercruiser TR outdrive behind a 3.0L OMC either.

I would first be getting that boat home, then posting some pictures of your outdrive and engine so we can figure out exactly what you have, because so far you haven't posted any information that is usable for us to help you with.
