Screeching noise coming from throttle control

I have a 1984 Evinrude 185hp that makes a loud alarm like noise from the throttle control/key area. I've read some of the threads here and the consensus is that a contant whine indicates the motor is overheating. However this is occuring as soon as I turn the key to the "on" position and it does not stop once the engine is running. Even if the engine hasn't been running prior to me starting it. I've ran the motor out on the water and it will sometimes stop whining but otherwise it usually happens whenever the key is in the on position.

Any reason why this would be occuring? I don't think the engine is overheating since this happens before I even start it. :D

Check and clean all grounds.

Could be a bad horn or a grounded tan wire coming from the horn. Disconnect the tan wire from the horn and see what happens. If it doesn't shut up it's a bad horn.

First of all thanks for the input. Sorry for the delay in response. I've been out of town and had not had a chance to work on the boat until now.

Ok, so I opened up the throttle control and cleaned up all the terminal connections and as suggested pulled the Tan Wire. No more noise when I turn the key now. What should I be checking for next?

Check grounds at engine.

That tan wire could be grounded anywhere between the control and the engine also.

As stated, it's probably a bad horn.

I wouldn't leave it disconnected.;)

Put the tan wire back on the horn and if it still screeches with key on go back to the mtr and disconnect the temp senders. If that doesn't shut it up look for a grounded tan wire from the control box to the mtr.
