I just discovered these gouges on the bottom of my hull. Don't know how long they've been there but they are, maybe 1/8" deep.

Any reason I can't just mix up a batch of Epoxy Peanut Butter and trowel it in level with the hull? I'm not real concerned with appearances down there.

I don't see why not unless there is a lot of wax in the gouges. You could fill them and cover with clear packaging tape to keep the epoxy in place until it cures.

Why not? But don't you have to at least paint it for UV protection?

You can always just get a little can of white gelcoat and some cabosil and do the same thing.

Da sun never shines down there Ralph ;) I like your idea of gel coat and cabosil (which I have) but my garage is littered with little 6 to 30 dollar remnants of various compounds that will just go to waste. I think the gel coat would be the same way.
Hmmmmm, on second thought maybe I could find some other boo boos to cover up the same way??

Methinks thats what I will do Tengals, as I have all the components in hand.

I've stapled my resto receipts together (haven't totalled them yet  ) I don't want to add anymore to the pile right now.

Grind the damage till you have fresh material to work with then the gel and cabosil will be your best bet. Chief ;)

Doesn't have to be direct sunlight Boom - sitting on the trailer even just during the off season may be enough to compromise an uncovered epoxy patch. You might ask the folks at west just to be safe if you decide to go the epoxy route...

Like Chief says, either way, you need to grind it out a little and chamfer the edges back a bit to ensure a good bond. A dremel would do nicely.

The pros say grind out a furrow with a 12:1 slope with an angle grinder. Wipe the cut with styrene, then lay in first a long skinny patch, then slightly fatter, then slightly fatter until you have a minimum of three overlapping layers. Finish off with gelcoat. I guess the main thing is getting fresh, strong, clean fiberglass for your patch to adhere to. Good luck.

Hey Boom, don't make a big deal out of nothin,, If it were above the waterline and you have matching gel, then mix it with cabosil and fill it, then spray a little straight gel (waxed) on top and lightly sand and buff. underwater, fill it with epoxy putty and be done with it....IMHO :D
