Scrapping a trailer?

Greetings, I have a question about what to do with an old Holsclaw tilt trailer. I'm in the early stages of a restoration, and this trailer was a throw-in with a project boat. I was going to use it until I took the boat off and discovered that the tongue frame is broken around the hinge bolt.

So this is how it sits, with the tongue only held on one side:

Here's the broken tab:

Here's where that tab ended up, on top of the hinge pin:

I have a newer single axle trailer that will get the job done, I think, so I'm just wondering what to do with this tandem. "Free trailer?" Scrap yard? Is this fixable for someone with welding skills? I won't sell/give away without full disclosure of the problem.

Thanks!

That was a thought, actually, but I'm trying to get a boat project done and just want it out of my yard. I'm guessing someone will take it for free or for some pocket change.

I'm surprised some one hasn't already stolen it from you knowing how scrap metal is going these days. If you truly don't want any money for it, just put it in your front yard with a for-sale sign on it and somebody will steal it one night... It sure wouldn’t last long in a few questionable places in middle Georgia like Macon for instance, that’s for sure!

There's a scrap yard a few miles from my house...is steel worth real money?

Donate it to the local high school. The students will get to do some welding, some mechanical, some electrical and you get a tax write off.

Thanks guys...I'll see if I can get "shredder scrap" value on CL. Maybe $75.

Just keep in mind it's not worth someones time to show up to your house and haul it off only to break even on it's scrap value...
Someone's gunna have to want the trailer at that price...

Gotcha. Since I never even registered it, maybe I'll try the old "free" sign on it, or just take it to the scrap yard. Thanks.

Re: Scrapping a trailer?

Someone might actually want it for repair or parts. Holesclaw's were a pretty high quality trailer, and it's tandem axle tilt trailer, so it could launch a bigger boat in a shallow or short launch easier. I bet you could get a couple hundred for it.

Hey, worth a shot I guess. I'll see what $200 OBO gets me, with an emphasis on "OBO."

If you decide to take it to a scrap yard, check to see if they are doing any Earth Day specials. We save our aluminum cans all year and then take them on Earth Day -- the price for aluminum is usually double on that day (and they actually do it for a couple of days before and after Earth Day). I think they also go up on the price for other metals as well.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

Re: Scrapping a trailer?

I don't see anything there a welding shop couldn't correct in a couple hours on the outside.

Yeah, but I'm going to let somebody else do it if they want it. It's got too many other issues that I simply don't have time for. Thanks for the advice, though.
