hi need help ref/ 80 hp merc<br />have no power on kill switch at offand on postion but do at crank is this right.as far as i can tell cant pick power up unless from ign switch. i have two wires colour orange one goes to merc switch and the other to kill on switch box marked yel/blk.i am sure that kill wires should have no power at any time would this mean bad ign switch also it has only a rectifer, two yellow wires from stator /wires joined to this are main red to + and brown to tacho witch is not used hope this helps kind reguards flips :)

Flips, the kill switch grounds the ignition.<br />It sounds like it is operating normally.<br />To shut off the engine, the orange wire touches ground (at the switch,when switched-off), and the engine stops. The orange wire is at potential when the switch is anywhere but "OFF", and the flywheel is turning.

12 footer<br />thanks i know it grounds ign but when i crank motor meter shows i have power on the kill wire i have this wire off and not game to replace till i am sure offit thanks

Oopps..Schematic, sorry.I really should read the title to these threads.<br />Anyway, Flips. You should have power from the orange wire when the flywheel is in motion. This is normal. I would be worried if you had nothing on the orange wire, as it would indicate a bad ignition. It does not get it's power from the battery (at least not directly). If you left the orange wire disconnected, the engine should start and run just fine...But when you decided to shut the engine off, it would stay running, with the orange wire not hooked-up. This is a good way to test your ignition switch,and safety lanyard switch (if so equipped) for shorts to ground.

12 footer<br />thank you thats just what i needed to help me make up my mind will put kill wire back now with faith. i was not sure as ever thing i read about kill wire says no power at all at off postion and on position took it for grated this ment at crank also thanks heaps<br />flips. :D
