Hi there all,

Last year I purchased and imported a family cruiser from the UK to Finland. After a couple of times taking it out we heard a screaming noise coming from the engine, soon we had smoke and only just managed to save the engine (Volvo KAD 32). The cause: The alternator belt had shredded to pieces. The boat had been unused in the UK for over a year and hence the pulleys had become rusty. Now we did one summer with new belts but recently I discovered some belt dust near the belts and pulleys.

I am planning to sand and paint the pulleys. Could you provide some advice on the type of paint I should use? Also any advise on the sanding would be very appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Any good "rattle can" paint will work well. I personally like Rustoleum brand - but I don't know what you have available there in Finland. The bigger issue is to sand smooth and then prime and paint. Using it on a regular basis will help keep the rust out of the grooves. Then keep it touched up before it gets bad.

Thanks for the advise! This will help me further! Regular use is a bit of a problem this far North as in Winter the sea simply is frozen, so good maintenance is essential.
