I recently came across an 83 scarab sport that has been enduring the Northeast Ohio elements uncovered, but winterised for the last 2 or 3 years. I have been out of boating for a while but the site of it drew me in to rescue her from her current neglegtful owner. It has a lot of potential but I'm wondering if anyone has any info on what problems to look for and what would be considered fair price, as the owner and I are currently price talking.

Sometimes a neglected boat costs more to fix than it will ever be worth, and the owner should pay you to take it away. Post some pics and more details.

Uncovered outside for a couple years? I'd expect extensive floor and maybe stringer damage.

Its on a trailer, twin 200 mercury.
Overall it is filthy. The worst I see is the interior of cuddy. It will need reupolstered. The wood hatch that covers the cuddy is shot, hense the water leakage into the cuddy. The rest of the teak I believe can be refinished. The floor seems very solid/sturdy. What I can see of the bilge looks dry (no standing water). No electronics are included. It needs batteries (3). No T top or biminy. Mooring cover is included but I suspect it is no good, other wise it would be on the boat. One engine only has one season on it the other has two. Just incase you don't know Clevelands boating season is 48 hours long. (ha,Ha). I don't have pics, but would appreciate any input.

What's he asking for it? Hopefully not much. The word "neglectful" you use should tell you all. Would you buy a car from a neglectful owner? Not me. The first sign of trouble is the exterior and interior's general look. The more you dig, the more you will find. This could end up costing you much, much more than you might think...and in the end you have a 1983 boat.

The heart and soul of that boat rests in those two engines. What years are they? Get the serial number off them and someone will let you know the actual years...and check the compression and see if there is any water in the gear oil. What do the props look like? New stainless props could run you a bundle.

As an aside, are you sure you can feed two 200's? That's probably going to cost you hundreds, if not a thousand in gas each weekend bombing around.

If you still end up interested after doing some of this research, I'd have it looked at by a surveyor before dropping any cash on it.

pull the plugs, and make sure the engines are not locked up, with the plugs out you can turn the flywheel by hand, with some effort. i would want to take a battery and do a compression check . you say it's a Scarab, what size. check the wheel bearing, before towing it off. get back with some pics.

Re: scarab sport abandoned

this is the way i see it...

83 hull isn't worth a thing, will actually cost you to get it going.

83 trailer probably not worth too much without putting $ into it.

motors might be worth something, IF they run.

basically, without putting money into it, it isn't worth much at all. this is what you need to explain to the seller.

start at getting it off his property for free

oh yeah, if there's water damage in the cuddy there must be another section to the bilge with water in it.

sounds fun and scary

I have bought a few that looked like they were ready for the chain saw. Then with a bunch of sweat, cleaning, wax, a dab of paint here and there and some "normal" service to the power plant I had good runnin and good lookin rigs that sold for a profit. The thing is to understand what is really there beyond the cosmetics.

A Scarab is a good hull. My neighbor is taking a 1984 30'er with twin 198? OMC 200s in the condition you describe and he is going to have a winner. He did have to replace the transon due to rot.

My project [colour=blue]
I spent the summer doing what you are about to embark on. Total rebuilds are not everyones best choice. Please read my last page prior to laying down the cash. Read everything on various forums and do the math first.

And when you're doing the math, remember to do the marine cost factor of 1.5x and time factor of 2x over what you think it should cost and take.
