Hi, I am currently installing a remanned merc 4.3 and the intake being used is off the old engine. There is a lot of surface rust in the cooling channels and i was wondering if it would be ok to sandblast it clean. I dont know if there is a coating that is supposed to be applied afterwards (to prevent bare metal against the raw water).

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Sandblast Intake?

I would personally take it to a local machine / engine shop and have them hot tank it. It only takes one grain of sand left behind from sandblasting to destroy your engine... I know people do it, but I'm not comfortable doing it that way personally

oops! and I used muriatic acid to clean his new intake. Dropped it in a large plastic container with a couple of quarts of the acid and in a few minutes we had a rust free intake. Make sure you use a acid resistant container though as we never and in about 10 minutes the stuff was coming through the bottom. The fumes are strong so use the propper equipment.
