F_R,

You're not wrong. Water (pure water) is the best solvent known to man.

"Pure" water is the key. Only distilled water would give 100% results. That can get a bit pricey and danged inconvenient.

I should have been more clear. My motor is new and like all new things you want to keep it that way (considering the cost:eek:). If I had a typical OB hanging of the back that was 5 or 10 or 20 years old I would not recommend starting a regiment like Salt Away. One would most certainly be wasting their money.

Happy new year everyone!! :horn:

Salt is not your worst enemy, it erosion from running abrasion laden water thru the cooling system.
My motor was new with the boat. 17 years and 2200+ hours later I had to replace the power head do to excessive erosion in the cooling passages feeding the heads. The erosion was so bad that the head gaskets would no longer seal allowing coolant to leak into the cylinders. My prior motor failed in a similar manner after almost 2400 hours.

No amount of flushing will prevent your motor from suffering the same fate. salt away is no fountain of youth. :)

On a new motor it is a good idea to remove some of the bolts on the lower unit that are immersed in the salt water.-Dip the threads in a sealer and re-install.------When they need to come out in a few years it will just be a lot easier.

Good advice racerone!

Hey dingbat! I agree with that abrasion laden water and try to stay out of the shallows where one picks up the mud, but 17 years and 2200 hours out of an OB? I think that's pretty good service. I hope this one will last 17 years!!

A perfect example of what my formula did to a 1973 mercury 65hp , this motor has never been opened , my m8t was haveing a pee water problem from the **** pipe it was dribbleing out i mixed my formula in a drum & let it idle for 40 mints , after 40 min,ts the pee was strong it cleaned up the inside , the salt corrosion has already taken its toll on this motor after more than 40 years in use , a few days later water started coming out between the head where it seals off on the casting around the plugs , upon removal of the cylinder head the casting around 2 plugs was corroded away , [for those that have stripped one of these motors used in sea water will know what iam talking about it corrodes around the plug areas ] i have also found corrosion in 1 of my johnson 70 hp,s of a similar nature on 1 cylinder head . coming back to where i left off . i found no salt left inside the motor when opend what was found is that the salt had sealed off the area where it was badly corroded , when it was flushed useing my formula it removed that salt around the corroded area & thats when it started leaking water the gasket had nothing to press on because the corrosion had eaten that area away , for folks out there that have found corrosion around plug areas will have a better under standing , to cut a long story short we need to flush our motors useing what ever to prevent corrosion , if the motor is to be stored for longer periods i mix parrafin with water after flushing in a drum flush , the reason the water in the motor evapourates when stored leaving a film of parrifin on the ally this i find stalls the oxidizing while stored
