Yes, for trolling... Use #80 Power Pro with 6-18', #80 mono leaders. 2.5 - 3.0 mph trolling speed, drags at max.~#22-25 lbs. Holes are not a problem...leverage and getting a 10/0, barbless hook to stick in bone is... If you've ever seen a #30-50 fast action blank bent almost to the butt while in the holder, you'd understand.;)

I don't do ocean stuff,....

Just walleye in the mid-west,.....

I realize that but the situations are the same, just on a smaller scale.

Your "hole" is being caused by the constantly change line tension due to the sloppiness and slow response of the rod.

We have a local fish that they call a Weak Fish (aka Grey Sea Trout) due to its tender mouth. The tackle of choice up to 10-15 years ago was a slow action rod that was thought to help keep from tearing / pulling hooks. Since then, people have figured out that a fast action blank with braid was just as effective, if not more, because of the "contact" with the fish. The exaggerated rod tip movements required to maintain tension on the slow action blank was replaced with a flip of the wrist on a fast blank. The result, better hook sets and less pulled hooks because of the instantaneous feedback.

King salmon in the great lakes have very hard jaws, especially during the spawning run which is when you'll find them in the streams. You'll need a stiffer rod for a solid hook up in those boney jaws. Unless of course you're trying to snag or floss them. (which are illegal in NYS)
